Warrior Spirit Indigenous Psychology Conference: Native Youth Encampment

November 17, 2016

On November 16 and 17th, 2016, the Center for Native America (CNAH) partnered with Native Wholistic Specialists, Inc. to host the Warrior Spirit Indigenous Psychology Conference: Native Youth Encampment. The 2016 conference was held at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Albuquerque.

The goal of the conference was to bring together Native American mental health and traditional practitioners from throughout North America to share effective mental health intervention strategies that incorporate aspects of Native culture with mental health service providers that work with Native youth. The focus of the conference was Native youth and their families and some of the diverse topics were character development, cultural identity, educational success, and mental health.

Center for Native American Health (CNAH) staff and faculty gave a break-out presentation on Supporting Indigenous Self-Determination: Communal Creation of a Best Practice for Community Health Assessment. Those who presented were Nathania Tsosie, Norman Cooeyate, Micah Clark and Tassy Parker.

A highlight of the event was engagement of UNM students. Current students were given the opportunity to attend the conference free-of-charge and many took that opportunity to attend the conference. Another notable attendee of the conference was the President of the Navajo Nation, Russell Begay.

The 2016 Warrior Spirit was a great success and on behalf of CNAH, we would like to thank all the Native health professionals and UNM students who attended as well as the Native Wholistic Specialists, Inc. for their partnership.
